Book Publishing: Everything You Need to Know Before You Publish

Here's something nobody tells you when you finish writing a book: finishing was the easy part. I've spoken to a fair few authors over the years, and almost every one of them says the same thing — the manuscript sat there for months, sometimes years, because they had no idea what to actually do with it next. Editing, cover art, formatting, ISBNs, where to even sell the thing. It piles up fast.

That's usually the point where a book publishing service comes into the picture. Not because self-publishing is hard exactly, but because doing it well takes a specific set of skills most writers never had a reason to learn.

So why bother paying someone else?

Fair question. Uploading a manuscript to Amazon takes twenty minutes. Anyone can do that part.

The trouble is what happens after someone actually opens the book. Typos an author read straight past for the tenth time. A cover that looks like it was made in about ten minutes (because it was). Formatting that's fine on a laptop screen but a mess on a Kindle. None of these things stop a book from getting published — they just stop people from reading past page two.

A decent book publishing service exists to catch that stuff before readers do. For UK-based authors especially, there's also a practical side to it: ISBN registration works a bit differently here than in the US, and a local team generally knows what actually resonates with British readers versus what's just imported American marketing advice.

What you're actually paying for

It varies company to company, honestly, but most publishing packages cover roughly the same ground.

Editing comes first, usually. Someone who isn't the author reading the manuscript with fresh eyes — checking pacing, structure, whether a scene actually needs to exist. Then there's cover design, which matters more than most first-time authors expect. Readers really do judge books by their covers, genre conventions and all, and a designer who knows what a thriller cover is "supposed" to look like is worth the money.

Formatting sounds boring until you've seen a book with broken paragraph spacing on every single page. Print and eBook formats have different requirements, and getting it wrong is one of the quickest ways to make a perfectly good book look amateurish.

Marketing is where a lot of publishing services either shine or fall flat. Some stop the moment the book goes live. Better ones help set up an author website, pitch the book to reviewers, or run a bit of a social push around launch. And then there's the paperwork nobody enjoys — ISBNs, distribution setup, getting the book listed where readers can actually find it.

Choosing between companies

A few things worth checking before signing anything:

Ask to see books they've genuinely published, not a stock list of "client success stories." Get pricing and timelines in writing — a company that's cagey about cost upfront tends to stay cagey later. Read reviews from real authors where you can find them, not just the glowing quotes on the homepage. And be honest with yourself about what you actually need; a polished manuscript might only need cover design and distribution, while a rough first draft is a much bigger job.

Where that leaves you

You don't need a literary agent or a six-figure publishing deal to get a book out into the world properly. What most authors actually need is a book publishing service that handles the parts they were never trained for — editing, design, formatting, distribution — so the book that reaches readers looks like it belongs there. That's really the whole point. Not turning writers into publishing experts, just making sure the manuscript sitting on a hard drive actually becomes a book someone picks up.
