How to Choose the Right PCD Pharma Company: A Checklist Before You Sign Up

The PCD (Propaganda Cum Distribution) pharma franchise model has become one of the most popular ways to enter India's pharmaceutical business — low investment, monopoly rights, and the backing of an established brand. But here's the catch: your success depends almost entirely on which company you partner with.

Sign up with the wrong company, and you'll deal with delayed supply, poor-quality products, no marketing support, and a territory that was never really exclusive. Sign up with the right one, and you get a genuine long-term business.

Before you commit your investment, work through this checklist.

1. Check for WHO-GMP and ISO Certification

This is non-negotiable. WHO-GMP (World Health Organization – Good Manufacturing Practices) certification confirms that a company's manufacturing facilities meet international quality and safety standards. ISO certification adds another layer of quality assurance.

Why it matters to you: doctors and chemists won't prescribe or stock products from an uncertified manufacturer, no matter how attractive your pricing is. Ask for certificates directly and verify them — don't just take a claim on a website at face value.

2. Look at the Breadth and Depth of the Product Portfolio

A company with 200 products limits how much business you can build in one territory. A company with thousands of formulations across multiple segments — general, derma, nutraceutical, veterinary, herbal, ethical — lets you cross-sell across specialties and grow revenue per doctor visit.

Ask specifically:

  • How many formulations are currently active (not just listed)?
  • Which segments do they cover, and do those match the doctors and chemists in your area?
  • Do they regularly launch new products, or has the portfolio been stagnant?

3. Confirm Genuine Monopoly Rights

"Monopoly-based distribution" is one of the biggest selling points of PCD franchising — but it only works if it's enforced. Some companies hand out overlapping territories to multiple franchise holders, which quietly kills your exclusivity and your margins.

Before signing, get monopoly terms in writing: the exact geographic boundary, how long the exclusivity lasts, and what happens if the company wants to appoint another franchise nearby later.

4. Evaluate the Marketing and Promotional Support

A pharma brand's reputation is built as much through marketing inputs as through the product itself. Ask what the company actually provides:

  • Visual aids and product literature for doctor visits
  • MR (Medical Representative) bags, sample kits, and detailing materials
  • Gift and scheme support for chemists and stockists
  • Digital/brand support, if any

Franchise partners who get strong promotional support consistently report faster trust-building with doctors — this is one of the biggest differentiators between companies that just supply stock and companies that function as real growth partners.

5. Check Supply Chain Reliability

Even the best product portfolio is worthless if it doesn't arrive on time. Delayed or inconsistent supply is one of the top reasons PCD franchises fail — chemists lose patience quickly and switch to competing brands.

Questions to ask:

  • What is the average order-to-delivery timeline?
  • Do they have their own manufacturing and packaging units, or do they outsource entirely?
  • How do they handle stock-outs or supply disruptions?

6. Understand the Full Investment and Margin Structure

Low entry investment is attractive, but it's only half the picture. Get clarity on:

  • Minimum order quantity and initial stock requirements
  • Payment terms (advance, credit period, if any)
  • Margin structure across different product categories
  • Any hidden costs — registration fees, marketing deposits, etc.

Compare this against realistic sales expectations for your territory rather than the company's projected figures.

7. Read the Franchise Agreement Carefully

This is where many first-time franchise holders get caught out. Review:

  • Contract duration and renewal terms
  • Exit clauses — what happens if either side wants to end the agreement
  • Return and replacement policy for expired or damaged stock
  • Any performance targets tied to monopoly rights

If a company is reluctant to put terms in writing or rushes you to sign quickly, treat that as a warning sign.

8. Talk to Existing Franchise Partners

Testimonials on a website are curated. A quick call with 2–3 existing franchise holders — ideally in a different territory than yours — will tell you far more about real-world supply timelines, support responsiveness, and how disputes get resolved.

9. Check the Company's Track Record and Presence

A company that has been in business for years, with a visible manufacturing and packaging infrastructure and a presence across multiple states (or even overseas), signals stability. New or unregistered companies may offer aggressive margins to attract franchise partners quickly, but stability matters more over a multi-year business relationship.

Quick Checklist Summary

Factor What to Verify
Certification WHO-GMP, ISO — verified, not just claimed
Product Range Breadth, active formulation count, new launches
Monopoly Rights Territory boundaries and exclusivity in writing
Marketing Support Visual aids, MR kits, schemes, gifts
Supply Chain Delivery timelines, own manufacturing vs. outsourced
Investment & Margins Full cost breakdown, no hidden fees
Agreement Terms Duration, exit clause, return policy
Existing Partners Independent references
Track Record Years in business, infrastructure, geographic presence

Final Thought

Choosing a PCD pharma company is closer to choosing a long-term business partner than picking a supplier. The company's certifications, product range, and monopoly terms will directly shape how much you can grow — and how much friction you'll deal with along the way. Take the time to verify each point on this checklist before you sign, rather than after problems appear.
