Can a permanent resident join the RCMP?
Yes. Permanent residents may apply to become RCMP police officers. The additional gate is residency, not citizenship.
To apply, a permanent resident must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) during the past five years. The RCMP states this requirement on its official basic-requirements page. A full breakdown of what counts, what does not count,
Citizenship is not required in order to apply, complete Depot, or serve as a regular member. Some specialized assignments that require a top-secret security clearance or specific travel documents may remain closed to officers who still hold only permanent resident status.
How the 1,095-day rule is applied
- Count physical presence in Canada, not the anniversary of the PR card.
- Days outside Canada (vacation, family emergencies, work travel) do not count.
- Time in Canada before permanent resident status was granted generally does not count toward this RCMP calculation.
- Arrival and departure days spent physically in Canada may count if the person already held PR status on those dates.
Applicants should total days against the intended application date, not against the date they first landed. Documentation the background investigation may request includes travel records, residential history, employment records, and tax filings. The method and the common counting errors are set out on RCMP Permanent Resident Eligibility.
What else must still be met
The residency rule is only one gate. Permanent residents must also meet the same remaining standards as citizens: minimum age (18 to apply; 19 to be hired), proficiency in English or French, a valid unrestricted Canadian driver’s licence, a Canadian secondary-school diploma or accepted equivalent, medical and psychological standards, vision and hearing standards, physical fitness, character, and willingness to train at Depot and relocate. Those items sit beside the PR rule; they do not replace it. Use the dedicated guide at https://joinrcmp.ca/rcmp-permanent-resident-eligibility/ before starting a GC Jobs application.
