Why Add a Snowplow to Your ATV or UTV?

When winter hits, your powersport machine doesn't have to sit idle. A properly matched snowplow turns your ATV or UTV into a serious snow-clearing workhorse — whether you're clearing a long driveway, a ranch, or a trail. The key is choosing the right blade size and style for your machine and your terrain.

Snowplow Blade Styles

Straight Blade

The most common and affordable option. A straight blade pushes snow directly in front of you and is ideal for open areas where you can easily redirect the pile. Best for flat driveways and parking areas.

V-Blade (V-Plow)

A V-blade splits into two angled sections, letting you cut through heavy, packed snow more efficiently. It's the go-to choice for deep snow conditions and uneven terrain. More versatile than a straight blade but typically at a higher price point.

Angle/Scoop Blade

These blades can be angled left or right (or cupped into a scoop position) to direct snow to the side as you push. Great for clearing paths along fences, buildings, or other obstacles where you need precision control.

Sizing Your Snowplow

Blade width is one of the most important decisions you'll make. Here's a general guide:

  • 48–54 inches: Best for compact ATVs and smaller UTVs. Nimble and easy to maneuver in tight spaces.
  • 54–60 inches: The sweet spot for mid-size ATVs and UTVs. Covers more ground per pass without overloading the machine.
  • 60–72 inches: Designed for full-size UTVs and side-by-sides with higher horsepower and front-end capacity. Ideal for large open areas.

Rule of thumb: Your blade should be no wider than 1.5× the width of your machine's front tires. Going too wide puts excessive strain on your front axle and steering components.

Blade Height & Trip Edge

Taller blades (typically 14–18 inches) handle deeper snow better and reduce the chance of snow rolling over the top. Look for a trip edge — a spring-loaded bottom section that flexes when it hits a hidden obstacle like a curb or rock, protecting both the blade and your machine.

Mounting Systems

Most snowplow kits use a quick-attach mounting system specific to your machine's make and model. Always verify compatibility before purchasing. A solid, rattle-free mount is just as important as the blade itself — a loose mount wastes pushing power and wears out faster.

Material: Steel vs. Poly

  • Steel blades are heavier and more durable for heavy-duty use. They're better for gravel or rough surfaces but can rust over time without proper care.
  • Poly (polyethylene) blades are lighter, rust-proof, and snow sheds off them more easily. A great choice for recreational use and lighter-duty clearing.
