What Chris Reeve Knives Offer

Chris Reeve started in a garage in South Africa in 1984, when he transitioned from a tool and die maker to a full-time knife maker. 

Over the years (which were not without their challenges) he moved from South Africa to Boise, Idaho, where the company is now located. But it’s what he’s done along the way that has changed the knife industry for the better. 

He pioneered the Reeve Integral Lock, which is, in essence, a frame lock, which today is widespread among folding knives. But this is no small improvement over the liner lock. 

While liner locks are more cost-efficient to produce, and easier to engineer since the liner and not the frame constitutes the locking mechanism, they are not nearly as strong as frame locks.

Yet, frame locks preserve the mechanical functionality of liner locks. In essence they work in exactly the same way; they’re just stronger because there is more stock behind the lock since it is integral with the frame (hence the name). 

Chris Reeve also helped develop industry-leading super steels such as S30V and S45VN, as indicated. 

Just taking a closer look at the former, it is a powder metallurgy steel with a fine grain structure and an even distribution of carbides arising from its concentration of carbon and vanadium.

With almost 1.5% of carbon and 4% of vanadium, it is not only exceptionally tough, but it is highly wear-resistant, which means it can hold an edge for quite a while. And, on top of that, the fine grain structure gives it a great ability to take a very keen edge in the first place. 

As for S45VN, it’s basically an improvement over S30V which has a little more chromium, plus some niobium and nitrogen. Cumulatively, S45VN is a cutting-edge (no pun intended) super steel that offers comparable toughness and improved edge retention, paired with superior corrosion resistance. In essence, it’s a “better” S30V. 

Chris Reeve was instrumental in the development of both, among other alloys. With over 30 years of full-time, dedicated experience in the knife industry, his influence simply cannot be overstated.

Today, Chris Reeve knives are known for excellent craftsmanship, use of top-notch materials, and rugged durability and dependability. Even among American made knives they are considered some of the best.
