Why Your First Crossbow Should Be a Recurve

The overwhelming majority of hunters in this country use compound crossbows. They are faster and more powerful, given the same draw weight rating, than recurve crossbows.

But they are also a lot more complex and they are generally considerably more expensive than recurve models.

With that said, here are some of the best reasons your first crossbow should be a recurve, not a compound model.

Shorter Learning Curve

For anyone that hasn’t ever shot a crossbow before, the simpler mechanics of a recurve model are a lot more approachable. In other words it’s easier to learn to use a recurve crossbow than a compound model.

It takes less skill to become proficient with a recurve model, let alone to become familiar with how the thing works, which underscores that proficiency anyway.

Simplicity of Maintenance

Compound crossbows have cams and cables, and a whole lot more hardware, fittings and fasteners, than recurve models.

The two cables will have to be maintained just the same as the string, which is extra work, but it needs to be done.

As for the hardware and the cams, you will need to make sure that they are present as well as properly torqued and tightened before you use the crossbow.

Many compound models also have split limbs, which will need to be inspected and maintained as well.

A recurve pretty much just has the limbs, trigger mechanism, and the string to care for. And these do need to be cared for, but overall maintenance is far more streamlined.

For Most Applications, They Perform Just As Well

The main selling point of a compound crossbow is that it will deliver a higher FPS rating, holding all else equal, such as the weight of the bolt. This is true, which also means that compound crossbows shoot flatter and have slightly greater effective ranges.

But at the ranges at which most hunters will be (or should be) engaging intended targets, this is really negligible. Long shots with archery tackle can be taken but they are also very risky, especially with targets that can jump the string.

Therefore, the extra speed of a compound model is often simply not worth the extra price and effort involved in maintenance.

Generally More Affordable Up Front

Compound crossbows are generally significantly more expensive than recurve models, which makes recurve models more approachable and more accessible to a wider range of shooters.

Considering the fact that some of the selling points of a compound model may not be worth it to some shooters, the lower cost of a recurve makes it more appealing, especially as a first crossbow.

Because You Probably Won’t Just End Up with One

And, lastly, let’s take a look at the fact that we’re just talking about your first purchase here.

You don’t need to break the bank out of the gate, especially if you’re new to the world of crossbow shooting or archery tackle in general.

Plus, on top of that, hunters usually have more than one. What hunter has just one gun or bow, and what angler has just one rod?

Exactly; there’ll be a time for you to put more of an investment into another crossbow, but you might as well start with something basic.
