5 Ways to Tell If an Anime Cosplay Sword Is Legit (Plus Some Red Flags)

If you landed here because you want to add an anime cosplay sword to your collection, like a replica from Bleach or Demon Slayer, but you don’t just want to get a wallhanger, then here are some things to look for to make sure you aren’t throwing good money after bad.

  • It comes with a certificate of authenticity. This is just one way to ensure that the quality of the anime cosplay sword you’re getting is there, and at least it is licensed in some form or other so with proper care it should hold its value.
  • It captures the details from the anime. You will need to rely on your own recall for this, but if you’re a fan of the anime it shouldn’t be too hard. Either way, you want a sword that captures the details faithfully.
  • The steel alloy is disclosed. You want to know that the anime cosplay sword in question is made with an appropriate steel alloy especially if it is described as a battle-ready sword. Some common alloys are those in the 10XX class, T10, and Damascus, though there are others. If you don’t know the steel alloy, assume the sword is not battle ready and should only be used as a replica, not for live cutting practice.
  • It is tempered. This is another thing that is necessary if the sword is listed as battle-ready. A sword cannot be used for live cutting practice unless the blade has been appropriately tempered. If it hasn’t been it will either break or bend (or worse) when it is struck against a target.
  • It has a full tang. Any battle ready sword must be made with a full tang that is close to the width of the full blade stock. This ensures the structural integrity necessary to ensure that the sword can stand up to live cutting practice.

Red Flags

Now that you know what to look for, here are some things to look out for.

  • Steel alloy is not mentioned. If the sword listing does not disclose the steel alloy, assume it is some low-grade steel that is not suitable for the construction of a battle ready sword.
  • Nothing is disclosed about construction. Unless the sword is stated to have a full tang, assume it does not have one and therefore cannot be used for live cutting practice.
  • It is noticeably different from what you recall from the anime. Obviously, if the details are not there, the sword is not going to deliver as much value as one that is replicated carefully from what’s presented in the anime.
