How We Actually Put Together Our Mother's Day Flowers Range

Nobody asks us this. But we think people should.

Every year around January our team sits down and starts planning what goes into our Mother's Day flowers range for that season and honestly it is a bigger process than most customers ever realise. We are not just grabbing whatever stock is cheap that week and slapping a Mother's Day tag on it. There is a whole method behind what makes the final cut.

It Starts with What Is Actually in Season

This is the bit that surprises people the most. Mother's Day in Australia falls in autumn not spring so a lot of the classic imagery people have in their head from American movies just does not apply here. We are working with what is genuinely blooming in May which means more focus on chrysanthemums roses in their hardier autumn form and a good amount of native greenery to fill things out. Anyone promising you peonies in May in Melbourne is either flying them in at a massive markup or lying to you a little bit.

We made a decision a few years back to lean into that seasonal reality instead of fighting it and honestly it was one of the better calls we have made as a business.

Quick Story from the Shop Floor

Last year a guy came in about four minutes before we closed on the Saturday looking absolutely panicked because he had completely forgotten and every other florist nearby was already locked up. We ended up throwing together something on the spot with whatever we had left on the bench and he told us later his mum cried when she saw it. I still think about that sometimes because it is such a random reminder that this job is not really about the flowers themselves it is about that split second reaction on someone's face. Anyway that has nothing to do with sourcing but it stuck with me.

The Colour Testing We Do Every Year

We test colour combinations on our own social pages weeks before Mother's Day even starts trending as a search term. It sounds a bit excessive but it tells us a lot. Soft pink and cream combinations consistently outperform bold red arrangements for this particular occasion which is different from how Valentine's Day performs for us just a few months earlier. People buying for their partner want passion and heat. People buying for Mum want warmth and softness. Those are two completely different emotional targets and we design around that difference every single time.

Sourcing Locally Where We Can

Around 40% of our Mother's Day stems this year came from growers within a few hours of Melbourne rather than the bigger import auctions. That number keeps climbing every season and we are genuinely proud of it. Local stems just travel less which means less stress on the flower and a longer vase life once it lands on someone's kitchen bench. It also means we are supporting small growers who are doing it tough in an industry that gets squeezed hard by the big international suppliers.

We will be honest though it does cost us a little more to source this way and we could absolutely charge less if we cut that corner. We choose not to because the quality difference is obvious the second you actually smell a locally grown rose next to an imported one that has been sitting in a shipping container.

Packaging That Does Not End Up In Landfill

This one is a bit of a soap box for us. So many arrangements out there are wrapped in plastic sleeves that get torn off and binned within about thirty seconds of the delivery driver leaving. We switched to recyclable brown paper wrapping and compostable floral foam alternatives a couple years back for the majority of our Mother's Day range and while it took some getting used to on the workshop floor we are not going back to the old way now.

What We Would Tell You If You Asked Us Directly

Buy early. That is genuinely the whole tip. The best native combinations and the premium rose bunches sell out well before the actual Saturday most years and the people who order in that first week of May always get first pick of the good stock. We are not saying that to create urgency for the sake of it we are saying it because we watch it happen with our own eyes every single season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flowers are actually in season for Mother's Day in Australia? Chrysanthemums roses and native stems like waratah and banksia are the main options since Mother's Day falls in autumn here not spring.

Is it better to order Mother's Day flowers online or in store? Both work fine with us but ordering online early guarantees you get first pick of premium stock before it sells through closer to the day.

Do you offer eco friendly flower delivery packaging? Yes our Mother's Day range mostly uses recyclable paper wrapping instead of plastic sleeves which a lot of customers have told us they really appreciate.

How far in advance should I order flowers for Mother's Day? At least a week ahead if you want the best selection though we do our best to accommodate last minute orders whenever we possibly can.

Final Thoughts

We put more thought into this range than people probably assume and that is exactly why our Mother's Day flowers keep bringing customers back year after year instead of just once. It is not about throwing together whatever is cheap and available it is about building something that actually holds up once it leaves our shop and sits in someone's home for the week.

If there is one opinion we will not budge on it is this. Seasonal and local beats imported and flashy every single time and we will keep building our range that way whether it is the trendy approach or not.
