About Klein Tools and American Manufacturing

One of the most frequently searched queries on the web regarding Klein Tools is “Is Klein Tools an American brand?”

With a German name, one might wonder. But let’s not forget that German ethnicity is one of the most prevalent in the country, so you can’t go by that alone.

It is a legitimate question, especially for those who would like (and justifiably so) to put their dollars into American manufacturing.

The short answer is, yes, Klein is an American brand. There is even a whole page dedicated to the topic on their website. We went through the details; here’s what you should know.

Klein Tools: American Through and Through

For over a century and a half, Klein Tools have been overwhelmingly made in the United States; the company was founded in the United States in 1857 and got its start fixing telegraph pliers. The company supported the telecommunications and electrical industries at first, before growing into the worldwide supplier of hand tools (and more) that it is today.

That commitment to American excellence has not faded in the least, and if anything, Klein puts just as much into American manufacturing as it ever has.

First, not only are most Klein Tools made in the United States, but the company has been increasingly investing in American manufacturing and facilities, especially over the past few years. In the past couple of years, Klein has opened several new American facilities and invested in existing facilities, while putting over $100 million into initiatives that will expand American manufacturing, as well as the sourcing of American made products and tools that would otherwise need to be imported.

While not every single item sold by Klein Tools is made in the United States, the overwhelming majority are, and American identity is at core of the brand’s value proposition. Their investment in new facilities, equipment and tooling in their plants has significantly contributed to their commitment to invest in American ingenuity.

While there are some Klein Tools that are made overseas (it’s just not practical to manufacture everything in one country, after all) you can rest assured knowing that for every product imported, they manufacture 14 here. In other words, Klein Tools manufactures 14 times more tools stateside than they import.

If you see it stamped with “Made in the USA” and it’s from Klein, you can rest assured that they either made it in-house, in America, or sourced it from a reputable American manufacturer. It is illegal to do otherwise and Klein takes it as a matter of pride.

Moreover, and in support of the initiatives mentioned, Klein Tools has no intention of shipping jobs overseas, and on top of that, they have never closed down an American facility. If anything, they are doubling down on their domestic production capabilities.
