Every Reason a 9mm AR Upper Is a Solid Bet for a Build

You can build an AR or an ARP in 5.56 like everyone else does. Or you can choose a 9mm AR upper for your build and make something unique.

There are plenty of good reasons to do that. Here are just a few.

Cheap Ammo

The fact of the matter is that 9mm ammo is far more affordable than most other cartridges except common rimfire rounds like .22. It’s comparable to if not cheaper than 5.56 and .223, especially when you get a good deal on bulk.

Available Ammo

On top of the fact that 9mm is cheap, it is also widely available. Pretty much any gun shop is going to carry it so you shouldn’t have a problem keeping your range bag full of ammo.

Low Recoil

The 9mm Luger is one of the lower recoiling cartridges out there, making it an excellent choice for beginners as well as smaller-framed shooters. You can shoot longer with less fatigue and spend more time at the range.

Plenty of Stopping Power

There’s a reason that law enforcement agencies overwhelmingly use 9mm. It’s effective at stopping threats. You don’t need .45 ACP or .40 S&W or 10mm. Yes, those cartridges produce more stopping power but ultimately it’s a wash unless you’re trying to stop a bear.

It’s More Practical for Defense Than Most Rifle Calibers

The 5.56 is going to overpenetrate at most reasonable ranges which actually makes it inferior for defensive applications, at least relatively. You shouldn’t have that problem with 9mm especially if you choose hollow points or other defensive ammo.

Versatility

There are a wide range of applications and shooting disciplines for which 9mm is appropriate, including but not limited to drilling, training, high-volume target shooting and plinking, competition, defensive applications, varmint and predator control, and in some limited applications, even hunting.

Easy Handling

A 9mm AR upper, especially if it has a short barrel or is intended for an ARP build, is going to be smaller and lighter than a full sized rifle, making it easier to handle, especially in close quarters.

Super Compact Builds Are Possible

You can make a really small ARP with a 9mm AR upper, especially if you start your build with a bufferless upper that skips the entire buffer system and uses direct blowback instead of gas impingement.

Lighter Mags and Overall Loadouts

All in all, 9mm is lighter and more compact than pretty much all rifle cartridges, which means your mags and your overall loadout will be lighter if you build with a 9mm upper.

Where to Get a 9mm AR Upper for Your Build
