Dholera, Gujarat: Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) is witnessing significant progress on two important fronts—environmental sustainability and industrial development—reinforcing its vision of becoming a future-ready smart city.

During a recent visit to Dholera, Gujarat Forest, Environment, Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia reviewed an ongoing scientific afforestation project aimed at enhancing green cover across the rapidly developing industrial region.

The large-scale plantation initiative is being carried out by the Forest Department over 19.5 hectares, with plantation work already completed on more than 10.5 hectares. The project focuses on creating a sustainable green ecosystem while addressing the unique environmental challenges of the Dholera region.

Officials informed the minister about the innovative plantation techniques being used to improve tree survival in Dholera's saline soil conditions and water-scarce environment. One of the key methods being implemented is the Drum Plantation Technique, which helps protect young roots from direct exposure to highly saline soil. In addition, advanced moisture conservation measures are being adopted to ensure adequate water retention around the saplings.

These scientific interventions have produced remarkable results, with plantation survival rates reaching 94 to 97 percent, substantially higher than those achieved through conventional plantation methods.

The afforestation drive includes more than 17 indigenous tree species, such as Banyan, Peepal, Arjun, Gulmohar, Kesudo, Khakhro, Gunda, and several others. These native species are expected to strengthen biodiversity, improve environmental balance, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the region.

Appreciating the efforts of the Forest Department, Minister Modhwadia stated that the scientific plantation model could become a benchmark for sustainable development and play a crucial role in shaping Dholera’s green future.

Following the environmental review, the minister also inspected the progress of a semiconductor manufacturing facility currently under development within Dholera SIR. He examined the status of construction activities and reviewed the implementation of critical technical infrastructure required for the project.

A detailed review meeting was held with senior company representatives, project managers, and engineering teams to evaluate construction milestones and discuss future execution plans.

Highlighting the significance of the semiconductor project, Modhwadia said the facility has the potential to strengthen India's position in the global electronics and semiconductor ecosystem. He noted that such advanced manufacturing investments will not only support the country's technological ambitions but also generate substantial employment opportunities and economic growth in the region.

The twin developments—scientific afforestation and semiconductor manufacturing—reflect Dholera’s balanced approach toward sustainable urbanization, where industrial growth is being complemented by environmental stewardship.
