India Vs Sri Lanka Top 5 ODI Matches
India and Sri Lanka have played some truly unforgettable One Day International matches over time. Most recently, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma scored centuries to propel India to an emphatic seven-wicket win against Sri Lanka.
Mahela Jayawardene led Sri Lanka to an impressive 274-run total during the 2011 World Cup final. However, Gautam Gambhir's composed performance saw India defend this total with ease thanks to his unassailable 97 off 122 balls by Gautam Gambhir.
2. India vs Sri Lanka Test
Indian cricket team visited Sri Lanka for two Test matches and three One Day Internationals during August 1997, holding their inaugural Test match at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. This record-setting encounter set by Sri Lanka included their highest team total for six wickets with 952 runs scored by Sanath Jayasuriya during this innings, the first triple hundred by any Sri Lankan batsman ever.
India won by an innings and 116 runs in a one-sided match on a turning pitch, as Tendulkar and Sidhu both scored centuries for India's massive first innings total of 511. Sri Lanka lost both innings against Kumble on this turning surface; Rangana Herath bowled seven wickets - his highest individual bowling figures ever against India at that time - but this wasn't enough to prevent their complete loss.
India prevailed decisively in the second Test match against Sri Lanka at home, winning by an innings and 226 runs. Ravindra Jadeja again proved his worth, taking eight wickets including a hat-trick while on track for becoming only the second cricketer ever to achieve both 300 wickets and 3000 runs simultaneously in Test cricket! Sri Lanka never gave up easily though; Dimuth Karunaratne made an excellent 148 to help save one Test against India while bad light cut short their second innings attempt before bad light ended it prematurely before rain arrived to seal victory for India who took both game 2-0.
3. India vs Sri Lanka ODI
With so much at stake, both teams put on an enthralling contest. Rohit Sharma led India as he recorded his fifth ODI hundred against Sri Lanka with only 92 balls played to reach his milestone total of 274/5; KL Rahul and Riyan Parag also registered double figures for India as they posted 274/5; for Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage made history as they battled their way back from troublesome position to score their maiden half century and reach 230/5 total.
As both teams entered the final over, both were evenly poised. India skipper Rohit had struck an immediate boundary off the first ball of this last over in an attempt to score one run and push his side ahead; but Sri Lanka's bowlers rose up their game and put a stopper to those hopes when Asalanka took Axar Patel's wicket which put their hosts back into control of proceedings before Dube and Asalanka caught Rahul and Kuldeep lbw in consecutive deliveries for Sri Lanka to level scores and seal victory.
Colombo reveled in an electric finish, yet both teams will likely be disappointed with a draw. There will, however, be many positives to take from their first ODI encounter; both will meet again for round two on Sunday at the same venue.
5. India vs Sri Lanka Test
Sri Lanka's unwise and abrupt tour of India proved a bitter experience for one of cricket's newest Test nations, rich in talent but lacking experience playing Test cricket - something India's spinners capitalised upon with success, particularly "Muscles" Venkatapathy Raju (nicknamed Muscles for his deceptively aggressive spin bowling), who claimed six wickets against them within 17 and 1/2 overs; combined with tropical weather conditions he rendered Sri Lankan batsmen virtually ineffective against India.
Sri Lanka was again overwhelmed by spin bowling in the second Test. A total of over 500 runs was easily eclipsed and Kapil Dev broke Richard Hadlee's record for most wickets taken in a single Test with Kapil taking 30. Only Ratnayake and Roy Dias scored noteworthy scores to save Sri Lanka; unfortunately bad light eventually forced play to end before any of their tailenders could finish playing their innings, handing India the series 3-0 victory.
India brought in Axar Patel as a replacement for Kuldeep Yadav after he sustained an injury, and he made an immediate impactful contribution on a difficult surface. India's batsman led by Pant's 28-ball fifty and Shreyas' double century laid the foundations of their convincing win.
Sri Lanka struggled to meet the rigorous demands of Test cricket during their tour of India in 2022. While they managed to avoid defeat in any one-day international matches, their struggles were compounded by draws marked by poor pitches and a team lacking attacking flair or composure needed to dominate against stronger opposition. India dominated in every Test match they played and easily outwitted an ineffective Sri Lanka side before easily winning its last one-off Test encounter against them with little resistance put up from Sri Lankan side.
