Products with suitable anti-wear additives can enhance surface protection, and friction-modifier additives can improve friction properties between lubricated parts.

But not all causes of engine knocking can be corrected with additives. When the issue is caused by combustion abnormalities, broken bearings, excessive internal wear, or other mechanical problems, a motor oil additive may not be a long-term solution.

Thus, initially diagnose the cause of the noise. Examine the oil level, condition, the required viscosity, and maintenance history. Then, assuming that an additive meets the engine and oil specifications, apply it as per the manufacturer's instructions.

To put it briefly, oil additives may be useful in enhancing lubrication and reducing certain forms of engine noise. However, they must not be used to substitute for the required maintenance but to supplement it.
