What Has Made the Karambit Knife So Popular?

Models like the CRKT Provoke really provide a strong testament to Vox Populi and what’s in vogue out there, and right now, karambit style knives are very popular.

But what’s the reason for this, and is a karambit knife for you? Let’s take a closer look.

Advantages of a Talon Style Knife

First things first, a karambit knife, also known as a hawkbill or talon knife, is a knife with an inwardly curved blade; it’s hook-shaped, like a talon, therefore the name.

These knives have become very popular among those who carry a knife daily for defensive applications due to their purported ability to excel in that capacity.

Granted, there is some merit to this. A karambit knife is highly effective (or rather, it can be, in skilled hands) at making slashing style maneuvers. They can be made to execute extremely effective slashing, hooking and pulling maneuvers and draw cuts.

That being the case, the best knife in a knife fight is the one in your hand, so keep that in mind. It’s really more the wielder than the tool. Any knife is better than none, and other profiles, such as needle points and stilettos, are actually more effective at thrusting attacks than karambits. So keep that in mind.

Also, there is the cool factor to consider here. Any guide that did not mention that aesthetics are partially responsible for the profusion of karambit style knives out there, or for their popularity, is not telling the truth.

Are There Any Shortcomings?

Now that you know what makes karambit knives so popular, let’s take a closer look at some of the things you’ll also have to deal with if you get one.

One, if you carry an EDC knife for general utility, skip the karambit and get something more utilitarian, with a drop point or a straight back profile. The karambit is not going to excel at general knife chores, whether that’s opening a box, an envelope, or cutting up an apple. There are far better profiles for general use.

The second is that sharpening a karambit is not necessarily easy. You will not be able to sharpen the inwardly curved edge of a talon-style knife on a flat stone. You will need either some sort of sharpening system, or else a sharpening rod. And even then, it takes a little skill to get used to.

If you use your karambit a lot, sharpening the knife is something you will eventually need to do, so be prepared for that.
