The Realistic Guide to Feeding a Family on a Chaotic Week

Every family meal plan I have ever seen was written on a Sunday by an optimist. Sunday You has time, energy and a clean bench. Sunday You believes Wednesday will involve a tray bake.

Wednesday You gets home at 6.10pm with a kid who needs to be at netball by 6.40, another one who has just remembered a book character costume is due tomorrow, and a bag of vegetables that has quietly turned to liquid in the crisper drawer.

The problem is not laziness or bad planning. The problem is that most meal planning advice assumes a week that does not exist.

Plan for your worst nights, not your best ones

Look at an average week honestly and mark the nights that are genuinely tight. For most families with school-aged children it is two or three, usually clustered around sport and activity commitments. Those nights are where dinner falls over, and they are where planning effort should go first.

The instinct is to plan the easy nights because they are more fun to plan. Resist it. If Tuesday and Thursday are sorted in advance, the rest of the week largely takes care of itself.

Build a shortlist, not a menu

Families do not need twenty recipes. They need six or seven meals everybody will actually eat, cooked well and rotated without guilt. Novelty is a cost, not a benefit, when you are tired.

Write your shortlist down and stick it inside a cupboard door. On a night when your brain has clocked off, a list beats inspiration every time.

Treat the freezer as the plan

The most useful shift is to stop thinking of the freezer as storage and start thinking of it as the meal plan itself. A freezer with four or five complete meals in it means Wednesday is already handled before Wednesday arrives.

You can build that stock two ways, and most households end up doing both. The first is doubling. Whenever you make something saucy, make twice as much and freeze half in portions you will actually use. Bolognese, curry, dhal, mince, soup and braises all freeze well because the liquid protects the texture.

The second is buying it in. Ready-made options have improved a great deal, and there are now New Zealand kitchens batch-cooking and delivering proper home-style frozen meals nz wide, in family-sized portions rather than the single-serve trays that never quite work for a household of four or five. Keeping a handful in the freezer for the tightest nights of the week is not giving up. It is the same logic as keeping tinned tomatoes in the pantry.

Lower the bar on what counts as dinner

A meal does not need three components and a garnish. Protein, a carbohydrate and something green clears the bar. Frozen peas count. A bag of supermarket salad counts. Toast counts more often than we admit.

Children also do not need variety at the rate we imagine. They need enough food, reliably, at roughly the same time each day. A slightly boring dinner eaten calmly does more good than an ambitious one served at 7.30 to a house full of meltdowns.

Give someone else a job

Children from about seven can set a table, drain pasta with supervision, chop soft vegetables and put a tray in the oven. Not because it saves you much time at first, but because in three years it will, and because dinner stops being one person's private problem.

The five minute weekly review

The whole system needs about five minutes. Look at the week ahead. Mark the hard nights. Check the freezer. Decide what covers the hard nights. Write the shortlist for the rest.

That is it. No spreadsheets, no colour coding, no Sunday afternoon lost to batch cooking. Just a plan built for the week you are actually going to have.
