Tengen Uzui is one of the more memorable supporting characters from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Tall and extremely well-built, Tengen Uzui is well-known for his extreme strength and stamina, as well as for his ability to individually control his muscles; in one instance, he was able to temporarily stop his heart to prevent poison from circulating around his body.

A Unique Sword “Pattern”

Not to mince words, Tengen Uzui is one of the most accomplished and deadly swordsmen in the entire Demon Slayer Corps, and he wields a very unique “style” of sword.

Whereas most Demon Slayers are known for their Nichirin swords, most of which are very like traditional katanas in profile, Tengen’s sword(s) are a pair of Nichirin style cleavers joined by a chain, and which he can yield in a manner similar to nunchaku. 

His dual Nichirin cleavers are massive in size, and joined by the end of each tsuka with a chain, giving Tengen the ability not only to dual wield them, but to swing them in devastating slashing attacks like a pair of nunchucks. 

Each Nichirin cleaver features a massive black blade with a flamelike amber outline where the hamon line would be on a traditional katana. Each blade has a deep notch in it, and the tsuka of each sword sports a red wrap. Each tsuka is capped with a gold kashira. 

Each sword is engraved with the Japanese characters that translate to “Destroyer of Demons,” and due to the immense size and weight of each blade, rather than carrying them in a traditional saya, Tengen carries them on his back, wrapped in cloth. 

Tengen is able to use his immense strength and control over such to great effect in battle; according to the lore of the anime, until Tengen engaged Upper Rank Six, no demon had ever survived a blow from one of his blades. 

In addition to this, Tengen is as memorable for his fighting style as he is for his swords themselves, and utilizes them in different ways according to his form. 

He is capable of wielding his cleavers with one arm, and has also been known to wield them by the chain that joins them, keeping the blades in constant motion so as to be more effective at blocking incoming attacks. 

His Fourth and Fifth Forms are also particularly memorable; in the former, called “Constant Resounding Slashes,” Tengen rapidly spins the swords around themselves, providing not only defense against incoming attacks but destroying anything with which the blades make contact. 

In the Fifth Form, “String Performance,” Tengen wields the swords by the chain that joins them and spins them while advancing on an adversary. This form enables Tengen to keep the swords in constant motion without needing to change in grip, offering a decisive offensive advantage.
