Defending the Price of the Bradford Guardian 3

Like most Bradford Knives, the Guardian 3 is not cheap. But also like most of Bradford’s catalog, it is available in several configurations, and one size is not expected to fit all.

So, with that being said, let’s peel back the layers and see why this is one of the most popular Bradford knives, along with why the price is not as bad as it appears.

Behind the Value

First, regardless of your choice of blade profile, the Bradford Guardian 3 is right in that sweet spot for a fixed blade EDC knife.

The blade is roughly 3.5 inches with an overall length of about 7; it weighs just about 3.5 ounces, too, making it perfect in size and weight for EDC.

It is neither so small that it can’t shoulder tasks that should be reserved for other, larger knives, nor is it large enough that it feels cumbersome when carried everywhere.

The fact that it is available in different blade profiles, such as a drop point and a sheepsfoot blade, is also a selling point.

The sheepsfoot profile, in particular, is highly attractive simply because of the utility of the pattern. The point retains its ability to serve as a carving or piercing tool, but is much more robust than in a drop point, and unlikely to break, even when pushed to the limit.

The steel is also probably the biggest selling point here. You get your choice, but either way, it’s a good steel. Whether you choose M390 or MagnaCut, you’re getting a super steel.

As for MagnaCut, that is one of the premier super steels on the market right now. With over a percent of carbon and more than 10% of chromium, it is both adept at edge retention and resisting corrosion.

But, on top of that, MagnaCut is also packed with vanadium, which improves toughness and carbide formation and distribution, as well as niobium and nitrogen, which improve carbide distribution, improve corrosion resistance, and refine grain structure.

No matter how you look at it, the Bradford Guardian 3 is made with an excellent steel, regardless of what you choose for it.

Then, it is also available with a wide range of G10 handles in different colors and patterns,  which offer a solid grip in all conditions and which do not require any maintenance.

Add to this the fact that it comes with a high-quality leather sheath that can be rigged for cross-draw and you have a knife that is well worth the price.
